Autotask on CrossOver: Working around the IE6 crash (updated)

UPDATE (2008/11/05): After playing with this some more, I'm sad to report that unfortunately this technique does not work all the time. :(

If you have been using Autotask on Internet Explorer 6 on CrossOver, you may occasionally (okay, more than occasionally) get an IE6 window that tells you that Internet Explorer has crashed:

If you press the Close button, IE will restart, but you will lose all your windows that were opened at the time of the crash. Not exactly what you want when you're in the midst of working on a few service tickets.

Today, I found a technique to work around that. The workaround is to... *drumroll*... ignore that window! Yes, I know it sounds crazy but it does work. If you just move that window out of the way and continue using Autotask, it will work as usual.

Of course, using CrossOver for Autotask is just one big band aid and is no substitute for Autotask officially supporting Firefox, Safari, and other non-IE browsers so that you can use Autotask on your favorite platform. But until that day comes, CrossOver serves as a good lightweight alternative to other heavier workarounds like virtualization.
