Firefox 3 was released on Tuesday June 17. The community launched a grassroots effort to get the most software downloads in one day. The grand total at the end of the day was over 8 million downloads -- Guinness is reviewing that right now to see if that's a world record.
What I find interesting is this worldwide map that shows the number of downloads by country. One could come up with all sorts of theories about the number of downloads in each country, especially relative to the population.
Let's start with the three most populous countries. USA has 4.1 million Firefox downloads at the time of writing -- unsurprisingly. China has... 309,781?! That's from a country of 1.3 billion people. India has 1.1 billion people, with 181,619 downloads.
Most of the European countries have less than 1 million downloads, with Germany as the exception -- 1.9 million downloads. And if the stats are correct, Falkland Islands has at most 7 Firefox users who like cutting-edge software. :)
Okay now that my Windows XP VM has been upgraded to SP3, let me get back to hacking on CalyptixVPN.. or maybe not, since it's 11:30pm Eastern and I'm totally worn out from the long exhausting week..
